National Lotteries Commission to Press Charges Against Former Board Members for Corruption

The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has announced its intention to lay criminal complaints against former board members allegedly involved in corruption. NLC chairperson Barney Pityana expressed strong criticism of the Auditor-General, holding them accountable for granting clean audits to the NLC despite rampant corruption. This decision follows increasing frustration over the slow progress of investigations by law enforcement and prosecution authorities.

During the presentation of the 2022/2023 annual report and second quarter performance report to Parliament’s Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) portfolio committee, NLC’s new board revealed its determination to eradicate corruption within the organization.

Barney Pityana, chairperson of the NLC board, informed Members of Parliament about the board’s plans to not only lay criminal charges against the implicated former board members but also to initiate civil litigation to recover misappropriated funds and to seek delinquent director declarations for the involved members.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Ebrahim Patel, voiced full support for the NLC’s decisions to hold the implicated individuals accountable for their actions. Emphasizing that these actions are not alternative measures to criminal prosecution but rather a comprehensive approach to ensure accountability.

Pityana further stressed the accountability of the current board members for the actions of their predecessors. He asserted the board’s obligation to act upon evidence that showcases violations of the Lotteries Act, indicating a significance to undertake duties and responsibilities with due care, honesty, and moral character.

In a post-presentation interview, Pityana highlighted the frustration with the prolonged processes of investigations by the authorities, resulting in the board’s decision to take internal actions within the organization.

The NLC’s determination to address the corruption issue demonstrates a clear commitment to rectify past wrongs and safeguard the integrity of the National Lotteries Commission.
