Mikel Obi Assesses Super Eagles Chances Ahead of AFCON

Former captain of the Super Eagles, John Mikel Obi, has shared his insights on the team’s prospects leading up to the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.

Mikel, a key figure in the Super Eagles’ triumphant campaign at the 2013 edition held in South Africa, expressed his thoughts on the current squad’s potential.

Under the guidance of coach Jose Peseiro, the team’s ultimate goal is to clinch a historic fourth AFCON title in Cote d’Ivoire.

Reflecting on the differences between the 2013 championship-winning team and the present one, Mikel remarked, “There is a lot of difference, isn’t it? Football has changed from ten years ago and dogmatically, it has really changed. I think this group of players now are a very young team.” Mikel conveyed this during an interview with CAF’s Media.

He added, “They play a totally different brand of football, so let’s hope we can really see good performance by us, the Nigerian team.”

In Group C, the Super Eagles are set to contend against the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
