NYSC Reshaping Nigerian Youths for National Progress

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is committed to revamping Nigerian youths for national unity and development. The Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau’ Ahmed, highlighted the Scheme’s aim to instill values such as discipline, honesty, probity, accountability, hard work, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance.

In an address at the meeting of the Scheme’s Management with some Corps Producing Institutions in Africa, themed “Tackling the Emerging Challenges in Mobilization of Foreign-Trained Graduates For Effective National Service,” held in Abuja, the Director-General emphasized the importance of nurturing graduates not only in academics but also in character. He pointed out the need to curb the prevalent practice of prioritizing financial gain over quality education, which hinders the production of well-rounded graduates.

General Ahmed further elaborated that, starting from the 2024 Batch ‘A’ service year, the NYSC will extend the collection of master lists of graduates to schools in Niger Republic, Cameroon, Ghana, and Uganda, which together account for about 20% of graduates from the African continent. This expansion aims to encompass countries susceptible to academic and travel document falsification.

Emphasizing the need for collective action against dishonest practices, the Director-General highlighted the NYSC’s commitment to combating unscrupulous individuals in the education sector. To tackle challenges in the mobilization of foreign-trained Nigerian graduates, schools in Benin Republic, Togo, Cameroon, and Niger will now be required to submit project-bound master lists of their graduates to the NYSC every service year.

The Director, Corps Mobilization, Walida Isa, also emphasized the NYSC’s dedication to engaging countries with academic systems deviating from global best practices and NYSC mobilization protocols.

The meeting also witnessed goodwill messages from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, underscoring the collaborative efforts towards enhancing the overall quality and integrity of the NYSC programme.
