The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has made known its intention to convene a political rally on the upcoming Saturday. The announcement comes in the wake of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) also declaring plans for a rally on the same day.
This development follows the recent ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which resulted in the removal of Abba Yusuf as the governor of Kano State. Despite his rejection of the tribunal verdict and his subsequent appeal, the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgement revealed a decision in Yusuf’s favor.
In light of the ensuing controversy, the Appeal Court reaffirmed its decision to oust Yusuf from office. Against this backdrop, the Director General of the Garo Campaign Organisation, Rabiu Bichi, representing Kano APC stakeholders, affirmed the party’s decision to hold a rally on Saturday.
Addressing concerns about potential clashes between the APC and NNPP, Bichi emphasized the magnitude of Kano and assured the public that there would be no such clashes. He further highlighted reports indicating the NNPP’s alleged plans for a mass protest targeted at key APC figures, raising concerns about the safety of individuals and property.
Bichi emphasised the APC’s commitment to peace and democracy, underscoring the party’s refusal to resort to violence in the aftermath of the 2023 governorship election, which saw the declaration of NNPP as the winner. Emphasising the party’s adherence to due process, Bichi detailed the APC’s pursuit of its case through the appropriate legal channels, accentuating the peaceful manner in which the party has conducted itself in the midst of the electoral dispute.
Moreover, Bichi brought to light the disturbing trends that have emerged following the return of the embattled leader of the NNPP, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, to Kano. He expressed concerns over the party’s alleged plans to instigate violence, not only to incapacitate the APC in Kano, but also to create an atmosphere of ungovernability in the event of a Supreme Court judgement favouring the APC.
The current political climate in Kano State continues to evolve, with the upcoming rallies serving as potential flashpoints. It remains imperative that stakeholders, including the security agencies, maintain vigilance and take proactive measures to avert any potential unrest. As the political landscape unfolds, the citizens of Kano brace for a critical juncture in the state’s governance and democracy.
