The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed the FCT Administration’s keen interest in collaborating with the governments of Cuba and Mexico in vital areas such as health, agriculture, and tourism.

Wike revealed this during separate meetings with the Cuban and Mexican ambassadors to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero and Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, in his office on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

He emphasized that the FCT Administration is open to partnerships with both countries, particularly in the realm of skills acquisition, as part of its commitment to creating employment opportunities for the youth in the FCT.

Notably, Wike highlighted the FCT’s expansive arable land suitable for farming and expressed the willingness to harness the expertise of Cuba and Mexico in developing the agricultural sector of the FCT.

Furthermore, the minister assured that as the capital of Nigeria and the host to all embassies in the country, the FCT will continue to provide a conducive environment for its visitors, especially the diplomatic community.

Expressing gratitude to the Cuban envoy for the visit, Wike underscored the deep historical ties between Nigeria and Cuba, stressing that many Cubans can trace their roots back to Africa, Nigeria in particular.

He also acknowledged Cuba’s significant contributions to the field of medicine and its efforts in combating malaria. Wike pledged the readiness of the FCT Administration to collaborate with the Cuban government to eliminate malaria in Nigeria, citing Cuba’s expertise in this area.

Wike stated, “I have witnessed firsthand the impact of Cuba in medicine and their commendable efforts in malaria eradication, and we are eager to partner with them. We are also keen on exploring the latest vaccine developments and how we can benefit from their cooperation.”

Furthermore, Wike applauded Mexico’s agricultural achievements and expressed the FCT’s willingness to partner with Mexican companies to drive agricultural and tourism development in the FCT.

“Mexico has a distinguished reputation in agriculture. Many Nigerians and Mexicans are involved in various agricultural ventures. The FCTA has always sought partnerships with companies that will contribute to the agricultural advancement of the FCT. Additionally, as a potential tourist hub, Abuja possesses all the necessary attributes to become a global tourist destination,” Wike affirmed.

In her remarks, the Cuban ambassador, Miriam Morales Palmero, emphasized the historical connection between Nigeria and Cuba, expressing that Cubans regard all Africans as their kin. She asserted that the visit to the FCTA was aimed at exploring collaborative opportunities between Nigeria and Cuba, reaffirming Cuba’s continued support for Nigeria’s malaria eradication efforts.

Similarly, the Mexican ambassador, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, reiterated the significance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between both countries. He highlighted their substantial populations and the pivotal roles they play in poverty reduction and global economic contribution, assuring that steps would be taken to bolster collaboration and expand the presence of Mexican businesses in the FCT.

“I am enthusiastic about enhancing our bilateral cooperation,” expressed the Mexican ambassador.
