President Tinubu Advocates for ECOWAS Regional Integration

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has urged for closer regional integration within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Speaking at the commencement of the 2023 Second Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of unity for the African continent.

The President, represented by the Deputy Senate President, Jibirn Barau, highlighted the pivotal role of regional integration, expressing confidence that the discussions during the session would have a lasting impact and serve as a source of inspiration for future generations.

“As parliamentarians, it is paramount to bear in mind that we stand as representatives of the aspirations and dreams of the people of West Africa, particularly those who have endured significant hardships and deprivations.

“Mr. Speaker, through your exceptional leadership, you have opened up new avenues for cross-regional cooperation and integration. Your steadfast commitment to upholding democracy in Member States and safeguarding the rights to freedom and justice in West Africa is laudable.

“ECOWAS can take pride in its accomplishments; with major cities in West Africa now connected by highways such as the Nouakchott-Lagos Highway. The historical division between Francophone and Anglophone countries has been diminished, fostering unity within the blocs.”

Furthermore, President Tinubu drew attention to the achievements of the European Economic Community, stressing the importance of unity, collaboration, and integration for African nations faced with unique challenges.

“The European Economic Community has successfully implemented a single currency for its Member States, maintained peace, and eliminated passport control within the Schengen region. They have effectively amalgamated characteristics of a federation and a confederation. African nations, with their distinct challenges, require even deeper cooperation and integration.

“The tragedies unfolding in Sudan often go unnoticed, while other regions receive immediate attention. It is imperative for us to take charge of our destiny by working together, collaborating, and integrating.”

In conclusion, he emphasized the necessity of integration, viewing it as a vital imperative rather than a mere choice, and stressed the importance of leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.

“The path ahead lies in the pursuit of integration and development. Together, we can achieve far more, leaving behind a robust legacy for the generations to come. Let us draw inspiration from the European Union’s paradigm and strive for the advancement of our beloved West Africa,” he added.

The session will also center on discussions regarding the 2024 Consolidated Community Budget and the progress of the ECOWAS Integration and Development Programme.
