A recent development in the political landscape of Rivers State has seen the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court intervene, restraining the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from convening the inauguration of the newly appointed Caretaker Committee for the state.
The dissolution of the Rivers State executives at all party levels by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC has prompted the constitution of a seven-man Caretaker Committee, with Chief Tony Okocha and Chief Eric Nwibani serving as Chairman and Secretary, respectively.
The anticipated inauguration of the Caretaker Committee, scheduled for today, 24 November 2023, at the Abuja National Secretariat of the party, has been halted by the interim order of injunction issued by the FCT High Court. This comes as a result of an ex parte application filed by Peter Ohochukwu, representing the elected state executives of the APC in Rivers State.
The court’s order restrains the NWC of the APC, as well as their associates, from taking any actions that may jeopardize the performance of the elected Rivers State party executives. Furthermore, all involved parties are compelled to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
Respondents in the case include Abdullahi Ganduje, the National Chairman of the APC, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary, APC, Chief Tony Okocha, Eric Nwibani, the Nigerian Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
