The Bishop of the Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has unequivocally dismissed the notion of vying for the presidency, despite persistent calls from Nigerians who see potential in his leadership. He staunchly believes that he is not the kind of leader Nigerians are seeking.
During the 8th House of Justice Summit held in Kaduna State, Kukah expressed his steadfast reluctance, stating, “A lot of people have been saying to me in the last 30 years, ‘Come and contest elections. Come and contest the presidency of Nigeria.’ But I know that I will not make a good President, because good presidents are not what you’re looking for.”
He further elaborated on his decision, adding, “Oga, make I finish with parish work, first. Because if I were under that illusion — a lot of people have told me, ‘We will pay for you. You don’t have to pay, because we believe you will make a good President.’ But I know that I will not make a good President, because good presidents are not what you’re looking for.”
Instead of aspiring for the presidency, he aims to focus on his current responsibilities within the parish. Kukah’s grounded perspective, encapsulated in his poignant statement, “I will not make a good President, because good presidents are not what you’re looking for,” presents a compelling reflection on the complexities of leadership in Nigeria.
