Impact of Ambazonian Crisis in Cameroon on Refugee Influx in Taraba State

Halid Usman Kwa, the comptroller of the Taraba State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has attributed the increasing number of refugees in Taraba State to the ongoing crisis in the Ambazonian region of neighbouring Cameroon.

Discussing the matter with Rev. Fr. Anthony Bature, the founder of the Foundation for Peace, Hope, and Conflict Management (FPHCM), Kwa emphasised the social challenges stemming from the presence of these refugees in host communities.

He explained, “The surge of refugees in Taraba is directly linked to the Ambazonian crisis in neighbouring Cameroon, particularly in Sardauna, Takum, and Kurmi. The integration of these refugees has reportedly resulted in social challenges within their host communities.”

Highlighting the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS)’s unwavering commitment to addressing the intricate issues surrounding migration and the welfare of displaced populations in Taraba State, Kwa stressed the importance of collaborating with the Foundation for Peace, Hope, and Conflict Management.

Furthermore, the comptroller shed light on the multifaceted nature of migration, citing factors such as economic opportunities, security, conflicts, and natural disasters as primary catalysts. He underscored the significance of a concerted effort to navigate these challenges.

Supporting this stance, Rev. Fr. Anthony Bature reaffirmed the foundation’s dedication to ensuring the safety of migrants and explored the potential for civil society organisations to positively impact the lives of the vulnerable population.

Advocating for a strong partnership between FPHCM, NIS, and the government, Bature underscored the imperative to address the diverse challenges encountered by migrants.
