Why Nollywood Actors Turn to Public Help During Sickness – Insights from Patience Ozokwor

Prolific Nollywood veteran, Patience Ozokwor, has shed light on the reasons behind her colleagues seeking public assistance when grappling with chronic illnesses.

According to her, while some actors receive substantial compensation, their opulent lifestyles make it challenging to set aside funds for unforeseen health challenges.

The esteemed performer also emphasized the substantial financial burdens placed on actors by their extended family and social circles.

She highlighted that when actors fall ill, their earnings dwindle, compelling them to turn to the public for support in meeting medical expenses.

Ozokwor’s candid remarks were made in a recent interview, with a snippet of the conversation circulating on Tiktok via KWS Nigeria.

She remarked, “Some of us [actors] receive generous remuneration, but when illness strikes, there is little to no assistance, as everyone assumes you are financially well-off. While battling the illness, you continue to support your family without any income. The ailment sidelines you, halting your ability to participate in film projects and earn an income. The savings deplete over time, leaving you financially strained.”

She continued, “Moreover, our profession demands lavish spending. Our outward appearance holds significant value. We are expected to maintain a certain image, often resulting in substantial expenditure. The pressure from people who perceive actors as wealthy is relentless due to our visibility. I’ve lost count of the individuals seeking financial aid who have visited my home today.”
