In a stern address at the launch of the 2023 Chief of Naval Staff Annual Sea Inspection Exercise in Port Harcourt, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, cautioned against the dissemination of false information and hate speech. Expressing deep concern over the prevalence of fake news and hate propaganda, Matawalle emphasized the need for maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria. He vehemently stated that the Federal Government would not tolerate any actions or communications that pose a threat to the harmonious coexistence of law-abiding citizens.
Matawalle admonished groups and individuals who engage in sowing seeds of discord through the spread of false information, urging them to cease such activities in their own interest. Issuing a clear directive to security chiefs, the minister underscored the importance of vigilance in identifying and addressing perpetrators of fake news and hate speech.
Emphasizing the imperative of upholding the democratic principles of the nation, Matawalle warned that any conduct with the potential to disrupt the democratic fabric would not be overlooked. He further stressed the significance of giving due respect to the President, asserting that such respect would fortify the government in its pursuit of the nation’s prosperity. In no uncertain terms, the minister affirmed the staunch commitment of the defence ministry to forestalling any acts that could disrupt the tranquillity and peace of the nation.
As the call to combat fake news and hate propaganda gains momentum, Matawalle’s unequivocal stance serves as a clarion call for vigilance, unity, and responsible communication in Nigeria.
