The Court of Appeal, Owerri Division, in Lagos, has unanimously upheld the victory of Erondu Uchenna Erondu Jr, as the elected representative for Obingwa West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Following the dismissal of the petition brought forth by the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Mrs Victoria Onwubiko, the court ruled that it lacked merit and failed to substantiate claims challenging the election results.
The petitioner’s allegations of over-voting and voters’ disenfranchisement were deemed unproven by the Appeal Court. Specifically, the request for the re-conduct of elections in 82 Polling Units (PUs) and claims of disfranchisement were unequivocally rejected. The court ruled that the petitioner’s legal representation could not serve as a substitute for substantive evidence.
Furthermore, the petitioner’s failure to produce the concerned voters to testify and prove their alleged disenfranchisement on election day was detrimental to the case.
Following the ruling, Hagler Okorie, the Lead Counsel to the lawmaker, expressed commendation for the Court’s commitment to upholding justice and described the judgment as a triumph for democracy.
Similarly, Emeka Eze, the counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), extolled the tribunal for ensuring justice prevailed, asserting that the verdict signified a victory for the rule of law.
Meanwhile, Erondu Jr, also the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Services, celebrated the judgment as a victory for democracy and his constituents. He emphasized the sacredness of their mandate and pledged unwavering dedication to fulfilling his duties towards them.
Expressing gratitude for the court’s decision, Erondu Jr reaffirmed his commitment to his constituents and assured them of his steadfastness throughout the duration of the case.
Promising not to falter in his responsibilities, the Uhie-born legislator reiterated his vow to serve his constituents dutifully.
