Thirteen individuals incarcerated in the correctional centres of Delta State have been granted freedom, marking a significant decision by the Delta State Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Diai.

During a meticulous three-week-long review, a total of 1,477 warrants were scrutinized across the five correctional facilities in the state.

The released individuals had been charged with a variety of offences, spanning from involvement in illicit organizations to offences such as robbery, attempted murder, and conspiracy.

Justice Diai, in justifying the release, highlighted that the directive was based on the recommendation of the Director of Public Prosecutions, who asserted that these individuals had no basis for further incarceration.

Among the correctional facilities, the Ogwashi-uku Correctional Centre saw 358 warrants reviewed, culminating in the release of eight inmates during the latest quarterly correctional visit for the year.

The individuals released from the Ogwashi-uku Correctional Centre include Osita Dike, Obinna Blessed Onyekwelu, Jerome Sunday, Akighir Sekav, Claus Manasseh, Abdulrahman Idris, Albishamin Emmanuel, and Akilu Haladu.

Furthermore, a total of 502 warrants were assessed at the Warri Correctional Centre, resulting in the release of three inmates. Similarly, 167 warrants were reviewed at the Sapele Correctional Centre, leading to the release of one inmate.

Nevertheless, at the Kwale Correctional Centre, 282 warrants went through review, without any resulting in the release of inmates. Similarly, at the Agbor Correctional Centre, 168 warrants were scrutinized, leading to the release of one inmate.

Justice Diai took the opportunity to express her appreciation to the Director of Public Prosecutions and all participants involved in the exercise, acknowledging their contributions and dedication.
