The recent apprehension raised by the Yoruba community in Kano State has sparked various reactions amidst ongoing political developments in the region.

Claims have emerged from the Yoruba populace residing in certain areas of Kano State, suggesting looming threats of potential attacks following the recent ruling of the Appeal Court, which led to the ousting of Governor Abba Yusuf.

The Appeal Court’s decision on September 17 nullified the election of Governor Yusuf, who had contested the gubernatorial election on March 18 under the platform of the New Nigerian People’s Party, NNPP.

The unanimous decision by a three-member panel of justices held that Governor Yusuf was not a valid candidate in the gubernatorial polls, with some of his votes being deemed void.

Furthermore, the court maintained that evidence presented by the parties confirmed that Governor Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP at the time of the election, thus rendering him ineligible to contest the governorship election under section 177(c) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Consequently, the court declared Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the election.

The aftermath of the Appeal Court verdict has incited widespread anger across the country, with some Nigerians accusing the ruling APC of manipulating the court’s decision, leading to protests in the ancient city, despite warnings by security agencies.

Allegations have emerged against some indigenous residents, who are purportedly threatening to attack individuals of Yoruba descent residing in the state, citing the influence of their ‘kinsman’ President Bola Tinubu in imposing leadership.

The Yoruba community has voiced its concerns, alleging an imminent move by indigenous residents to carry out attacks against them.

Under the auspices of the Concerned Yoruba Community in Kano, the group’s leader, Taofeek Olalekan Olaosebikan, highlighted the precarious situation, emphasizing the need for intervention from Yoruba leaders and other concerned citizens to address the issue.

Mr Matthew Adebayo, a Yoruba trader in Kano, expressed dismay over the alleged threats from indigenous residents and the adverse impact on their businesses, appealing for a peaceful coexistence.

In response, Seyi Oluronsola, Chairman of the Yoruba Cultural Group, dismissed the allegations as a ploy by the NNPP and its supporters to tarnish the president’s image.

While reacting to the situation, the National Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, Comrade Jare Ajayi, reiterated the significance of seeking help when sensing impending danger, cautioning against any interference with the judicial process.

Ajayi emphasized the need for security agencies to ensure the protection of all residents in Kano State, urging the government and law enforcement to guarantee the safety of every individual, regardless of tribal affiliation.

He also appealed to politicians to uphold peace and harmony, encouraging adherence to legal avenues for seeking redress and avoiding actions that could provoke unrest and reprisals.

As tensions mount and apprehensions linger, all eyes are on Kano State, awaiting measures to quell the unrest and safeguard the rights and safety of all residents.
