In a passionate plea for unity, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, urged Nigerians to embrace the country’s diverse culture and communal bond, emphasizing its pivotal role in fostering unity among the people.

Senator Akpabio expressed these sentiments during his address at the thanksgiving and dedication service of Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong and his family, representing the Cross River southern senatorial district, in the vibrant city of Calabar, the Cross River State capital. Fondly reminiscing about his upbringing in various states of Nigeria, Akpabio underscored the pride that citizens take in their diversity, vividly manifested during the 2023 general elections, which saw the election of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Our diversity is the bedrock of our strength as a nation. I have personally embraced the spirit of diversity in Nigeria since the tender age of 9. Our people take immense pride in our diversity, as evidenced in the 2023 election, despite initial skepticism surrounding the religious affiliations of the President and Vice President. We wholeheartedly support the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the church fervently prays for his success, realizing that his triumph is intrinsically linked to the prosperity of Nigeria,” he emphasized.

Turning his attention to the Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, the Senate President implored him to govern with compassion and to invest in the creation of enduring infrastructure that would redound to the benefit of the people, leaving an indelible legacy of his tenure.

“I urge you to lead Cross River State with compassion, prioritizing the development of infrastructure that will withstand the test of time, ensuring that future generations will appreciate your dedicated service. I anticipate that you will emulate the exemplary leadership of former Governor Donald Duke, leaving an indelible legacy in the minds of the people,” he counselled.

Akpabio commended the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jubrin, for gracing the thanksgiving service, accompanied by 50 other senators and 20 members of the House of Representatives. He also acknowledged the esteemed presence of former Governor Donald Duke and his wife, Onari, at the occasion.

The service was also attended by notable dignitaries, including the Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, Senator Ali Ndume, and the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, among other esteemed guests.
