Thousands in Casablanca Rally for Palestinians and Ceasefire in Gaza

Moroccan citizens from all walks of life came together in a powerful demonstration of solidarity in Casablanca, demanding an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, and urging an end to diplomatic ties with Israel.

The streets of Casablanca were awash with the striking imagery of fluttering Palestinian flags and individuals adorned in the iconic black and white keffiyeh scarves, as tens of thousands lent their voices to the cause.

Champions of the cause advocated for the severance of ties between Morocco and Israel, a move initiated three years ago in 2020 as part of a wider regional normalization process between Israel and several Arab nations.

Despite a lull in pro-Palestinian protests in the intervening years, the resurgence of fervent pro-Palestinian sentiment in Morocco has been ignited by the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, sparked by the Hamas attack on 7th October.

Nabila Mounib, a spirited Socialist MP, passionately declared, β€œWhat we need is not a truce, but a definitive ceasefire so that we can sit down together and give peace a chance. The creation of a sovereign Palestinian state with Al-Quds as its capital, the possibility of the return of all the exiles from the entire Palestinian diaspora and the release of the prisoners in the jails of the Zionist state.” Her words resonated deeply with the impassioned crowd.

The rallying cry transpired amidst a four-day hiatus in hostilities between Israel and Hamas, following a grueling seven-week conflict that has led to the tragic loss of nearly 15,000 Palestinian lives and 1,200 Israelis, as reported by officials from both sides.
