President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that the Federal Government is contemplating reintroducing the Policy of University Full Autonomy to advance progression and reduce external hindrances.
This initiative aligns with the government’s conviction that university autonomy facilitates independent growth and development.
Tinubu expressed optimism in the proposed approach while delivering the message through the Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engineer Abubakar Momoh, at the University of Benin’s 48th convocation ceremony over the weekend.
“University autonomy will undoubtedly shift the accountability for performance directly to the individual institutions as opposed to the current state of uncertainties,” he asserted.
During his address, the President underscored the concerns of university staff regarding unpaid salaries.
He announced the disbursement of four months’ salaries for all university employees to alleviate the issue.
Additionally, Tinubu pledged to uphold the government’s commitment to enhancing university conditions by providing essential amenities such as lecture theatres, student hostels, administrative offices, and educational resources.
These facilities, established through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), are intended to motivate both staff and students towards achieving academic success.
Tinubu affirmed, “As a responsible government, we will continually allocate substantial resources to education and formulate enduring policies that will transcend this administration.
“Our universities bear the multifaceted responsibility of expanding intellectual frontiers through research and technological advancements, imparting relevant skills, and fostering an entrepreneurial outlook.”
