The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called for an emergency meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of aviation regulatory agencies to address the recurring safety issues in the aviation industry.
In an official statement released on Monday, the Minister emphasized the critical need to thoroughly assess recent incidents during the meeting. He stated, “To discuss the recent accidents in the sector and will thereafter brief the press on the outcome of the deliberation to avert such occurrences.”
Expressing concerns about the safety of the aviation sector raised by the public, he added, “Due to safety concerns in the aviation sector expressed by members of the public, I have summoned the heads of the regulatory agencies to my office later today to review the incidents that are the causes of these concerns and to ensure that appropriate steps are taken to forestall future occurrence and to apply sanctions, where necessary, regarding the past incidents.”
The agencies summoned include the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Federal Airport Authority Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
Recently, there was an alarming incident when a United Airlines aircraft landed at Asaba International Airport on Sunday instead of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), prompting concerns among passengers. Consequently, the wet lease aircraft under United Nigeria Airlines were reportedly suspended.
