Abigail Mor Edan, the youngest U.S. citizen held by Hamas, has been freed and reunited with her family in Israel, confirmed by President Biden and the Israeli military.

Tragically, Abigail, who recently turned 4 years old, was taken to Gaza after her parents fell victim to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, resulting in an estimated 240 individuals, including Abigail, being held captive by Hamas.

After tense anticipation, Abigail’s name surfaced on a list of hostages earmarked for release by Hamas. However, uncertainty loomed, and it was not until Sunday that she, alongside sixteen others, found freedom. Among the group released were 14 Israelis and three foreign nationals, including Abigail, who holds Israeli and American citizenship.

The release came in the wake of earlier waves of hostages set free, all contingent upon a deal with Israel. This agreement stipulated the release of at least 50 captive women and children in Gaza, along with approximately 150 Palestinian women and teenagers imprisoned in Israel. Additionally, the terms included a temporary cease-fire allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza and displaced Palestinians to return to their homes.

Despite the four-day truce, with Sunday marking the third day, Israel expressed willingness to extend the cease-fire in exchange for the release of more hostages by Hamas.

President Biden publicly acknowledged Abigail’s liberation, expressing his relief that she is now in Israel after enduring a harrowing ordeal. Abigail’s great-aunt, Liz Hirsh Naftali, and cousin, Noa Naftali, shared their overwhelming relief and gratitude upon learning of her safe return, emphasizing the importance of relentless efforts to bring all hostages back home.

Reflecting on the traumatic events, the family recounted how Abigail’s parents tragically lost their lives, leaving her and her siblings orphaned. They described the terrifying experience of Abigail’s survival, her brave escape, and her eventual rescue by neighbors who themselves became hostages.

Amidst the tragedy, the family highlighted the resilience and hope for a brighter future for Abigail, her siblings, and the other affected children. They emphasized the need for continued support and love to help the children heal and rebuild their lives after such unimaginable loss and trauma.

Following her release, Abigail is set to live with her aunt, uncle, and grandparents, who are already caring for her siblings. The family assures that they will provide the love and support the children need as they navigate the challenging journey ahead.

Abigail’s return brings hope and a sense of closure to her siblings, who, despite the trauma, demonstrate resilience and a yearning for a brighter tomorrow.
