In a recent address to members of Study Group 4, Senior Course 46 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State emphasized the critical need for heightened military presence across the state.

Highlighting the strategic geographical features of the state, Governor Otu stressed the necessity for greater military and technical support. He pointed out that Cross River State shares extensive boundaries with other African countries and possesses one of the country’s lengthiest coastlines. Governor Otu underscored the challenges arising from these factors, including land, air, and maritime border skirmishes that necessitate an increased military presence to curtail.

Expressing his satisfaction at the college’s decision to include Cross River in their study tour, Governor Otu emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to bolster the security framework within the state. He drew attention to the existing military infrastructure, noting that despite the state’s challenging security dynamics, it is supported by only four military formations.

Commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their unwavering commitment to national security and territorial integrity, Governor Otu urged citizens to take pride in the gallant efforts of the military in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and unity.

Brigadier General Nicolas Rume, the Director of the Department of Joint Studies and Team Leader of Study Group 4, Senior Course 46, outlined the objectives of their visit, stating that their assessment aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Armed Forces in addressing insecurity. The findings from the study tour will form the basis for recommendations to enhance security measures.

As the call for increased military presence in Cross River reverberates, it becomes evident that concerted efforts are imperative to mitigate the security challenges plaguing the state. The role of the Armed Forces in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity remains pivotal, and collaborative initiatives between the government, military, and relevant stakeholders are crucial in addressing the complex security dynamics.
