The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria, together with the Nigeria Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has officially unveiled the Nigeria Visualised web platform and report. The aim is to bolster data literacy and enhance understanding of the nation’s dynamic landscape.
At the launch event in Abuja, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Mathias Schmale stressed the project’s significance for the full implementation of government policies and programmes in Nigeria. He emphasized the need to prioritize data visualization in decision-making to meet the UN 2030 agenda for sustainable development. This entails tracking key indicators of progress globally and supporting governments in reporting on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, highlighted the project’s potential to provide Nigerians with access to vital information. He emphasized how visualization can offer a comprehensive view of the country’s developmental challenges, cultural opportunities, and issues such as climate change.
The collaboration between UNDP, the Ministry, and the NBS represents a significant milestone in the collective effort to raise awareness of data literacy among Nigerians, according to Mr. Semiu Adeniran, the Statistician General of the Federation and CEO of the NBS. The visualisation project serves as a crucial tool for showcasing and disseminating Nigeria’s socio-economic data landscape.
UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Yahya, highlighted the initiative’s goal to improve understanding of data visualization, emphasizing the importance of presenting data in an accessible manner for decision-making purposes.
The event also featured a quiz about Nigeria, a video presentation on the importance of data visualization, the unveiling of the report, and the inauguration of the website on data visualization.
