Tinubu Set to Depart Abuja for COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to depart from Abuja to Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, as confirmed by a statement from the Presidency issued on Tuesday.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, revealed that President Bola Tinubu will deliver a national statement at the COP28 Climate Summit. The statement will emphasise Nigeria’s position on various thematic issues, including renewable energy and climate financing.

The COP28, also known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, will host the World Leaders’ Summit with the theme, “Unite, Act, and Deliver” from December 1st to December 2nd.

Ngelale highlighted that President Tinubu’s address will underscore the severe impact of climate change on Nigeria, encompassing desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and national security risks. Additionally, the President will utilise the platform to advocate for increased financial and technical support from developing nations and prompt developed countries to fulfill their public pledge of providing 100 billion dollars annually to address climate change-related challenges.

Furthermore, President Tinubu’s message will stress Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices, aiming to hold businesses and institutions accountable. The Nigerian delegation will actively explore forging new and deeper bilateral partnerships to implement Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.

Ngelale noted that President Tinubu’s active participation in key sideline events will bolster his commitment to attract foreign direct investment, thereby enhancing wealth creation and revenue expansion in the country. The President will also take part in other events hosted by the Nigerian delegation during the summit.

Accompanied by senior government officials, President Tinubu is expected to return to Abuja following the conclusion of the summit.
