The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, has officially expressed its unwavering support and confidence in its leadership, reposing faith in Williams Akporeha as President, and Olawale Afolabi as General Secretary. The endorsement came after the union’s urgent gathering to address the recent internal turmoil.

During the emergency meeting called to address the crisis within the union, Tayo Aboyeji, the Lagos Council Zonal Chairman, reiterated the council’s confidence in the national leadership of NUPENG, highlighting their commitment to the welfare of members and the overall progression of the union. He stressed the importance of the engagement, emphasizing that it would provide an in-depth understanding and firsthand information on the pertinent issues.

Aboyeji underscored the council’s primary objectives, emphasising their dedication to safeguarding and advocating for the rights and welfare of members while also striving to enhance working conditions. Additionally, the union aims to foster unity and solidarity among members and contribute to the growth of the oil and gas industry, as well as the national economy.

Furthermore, Aboyeji detailed the council’s proactive approach, mentioning regular meetings with branch executive members, employers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to address sector-related challenges. He also highlighted the organization of annual zonal council educational conferences and other capacity-building programmes designed to enhance the members’ skills and expertise.

In his remarks, Salimon Oladiti, the union’s National Trustee and a former chairman of Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) at NUPENG, underscored the pivotal role of information in maintaining stability within the union. He commended the leadership for spearheading a significant project – the construction of an eight-storey secretariat within the span of six years, acknowledging their commendable efforts.

With the union’s resolute stance and understanding of the internal dynamics, the declaration underscores a pivotal step towards unity and stability within NUPENG.
