In a bid to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal by the Federal Government, Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has given the green light for the payment of N15,000 as a monthly wage award to active civil servants.
The governor has also extended this gesture to pensioners, who are set to receive a monthly wage award of N10,000. This six-month initiative will kick off from December, according to a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
Adeleke affirmed that this move echoes his unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers and fulfills his promise to gradually introduce palliative measures to cushion the impact of subsidy removal.
Highlighting the significance of this decision, Governor Adeleke stated, “On the first day of my second year in office, I unveil this wage award and reaffirm our five-point agenda which has workers’ welfare as the number one item.”
The official circular issued by Sunday Olugbenga Fadele, a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources and Capacity Building, Osogbo, underscored the rationale behind the governor’s action.
“Sequel to the negotiation meetings and interactions with the labour movement in Osun state, including the representatives of Nigeria Union of Pensioners, the Governor of Osun State, His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has approved the monthly payment of N15,000 to each active worker and N10,000 to each pensioner in Osun state as palliatives to assuage the pains being experienced as a result of removal of petroleum subsidy by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The payment, as approved, is to commence from the month of December 2023 for a period of six (6) months,” the circular reads in part.
The statement also acknowledged and appreciated the understanding and support of workers and pensioners towards the state government’s efforts to enhance their welfare, with a commitment to prioritize workers’ welfare as a crucial aspect of the administration’s 5-point Action Plan.
It is anticipated that this government gesture will serve as a motivation for workers in the state to exhibit heightened diligence and dedication to their responsibilities.
