FIRS and EFCC Join Forces to Combat Tax Evasion

The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr Zacch Adedeji, has emphasized the need for a collaborative effort between the FIRS and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in tracking and reporting local and trans-border financial transactions.

During his courtesy visit to the EFCC Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede, in Abuja, the FIRS Chairman highlighted the significance of this synergy in a rapidly evolving digital and knowledge-driven economy.

In a statement by his media aide, Dare Adekanmbi, Adedeji expressed the importance of leveraging third-party data, information, and intelligence from sister agencies like the EFCC to enhance the tracking of transactions, especially those involving companies, multinationals, and high-net-worth individuals.

Furthermore, Adedeji proposed joint training and capacity-building programs to bolster the skills of both FIRS and EFCC personnel in detecting and addressing financial crimes associated with tax evasion.

In response, Olukoyede acknowledged the significance of the collaboration and reassured the FIRS boss of sustaining the existing relationship between the two agencies. He also called for a review of the memorandum of understanding governing operations in units such as the tax fraud section and joint task force.
