President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sorrow over the devastating loss of 11 mineworkers at Shaft 11 of the Impala Platinum Mine in Rustenburg, North West, South Africa.
During an incident on Monday, several miners sustained injuries while being hoisted to the surface, as the conveyance unexpectedly descended at a rapid pace.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Presidency conveyed the President’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased mineworkers, as well as his sympathies to the management and staff of Implats. Additionally, President Ramaphosa extended his best wishes for a full recovery to the injured workers, particularly those in critical care.
President Ramaphosa has urged all relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the Chief Inspector of Mines in conducting a thorough investigation in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act. This proactive approach is crucial for safeguarding mineworkers and aligns with the industry’s Zero Harm objectives, while also ensuring operational continuity in mines.
Meanwhile, Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, has pledged that his department will conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the tragic accident. Minister Mantashe visited the mine on Tuesday following the distressing incident.
