An alarming incident unfolded at the old Government Secretariat near Government House in Calabar, as gunmen ruthlessly targeted an accountant from the Cross River Ministry of Education. The unsuspecting accountant found himself in their crosshairs when he was trailed from a bank, where he had gone to carry out routine transactions.
The tranquillity of the moment was shattered when the two assailants, who had brazenly followed the accountant, confronted him at his office complex. In a callous display of criminality, they callously shot him in the thigh before forcibly seizing the bag containing the money.
Unfortunately, the spokesperson of the state Police Command, SP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the distressing report. The victim, critically wounded, was promptly rushed to the Naval Referral hospital for urgent medical attention. SP Irene Ugbo expressed her disdain, condemning such a heinous act. She assured the public that the police force has initiated a vigorous pursuit of the perpetrators, who reportedly fled the scene on a motorcycle.
It is disheartening to note that Calabar has been grappling with a notable upsurge in motorcycle-related robbery attacks in recent times. This worrisome trend has undoubtedly created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity within the city.
