Man Accuses Wife of Bullying and Confinement, Seeks Divorce in Ibadan Court

A man, Kazeem Yekini, appearing before a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, has made startling accusations against his estranged wife, Opeyemi, as he seeks to dissolve their marriage, stating that it has had a detrimental impact on his life.

Yekini claimed that his wife consistently bullies and blackmails him, causing irreparable damage to his reputation and inadvertently casting a spell on him that has led to untold suffering. He further alleged that she goes as far as confining him to a room and preventing him from attending to his daily responsibilities, even confiscating his car keys and involving local security operatives without just cause.

Furthermore, Yekini expressed that he has received no aid or intervention from neighbours and family members, as they fear his wife’s dominance, an assertion not refuted by Opeyemi during cross-examination.

Responding to the allegations, Opeyemi acknowledged her confrontations with her husband but maintained that she had made efforts to reconcile with him to no avail, pleading for custody of their only child in the event of a divorce.

In delivering the verdict, President S.M. Akintayo noted that the marriage lacked the necessary foundational requirements as stipulated by Customary Law, resulting in an illegal union. Hence, the court ruled in Opeyemi’s favor for child custody and ordered Yekini to provide a monthly allowance of N10,000 for the child’s welfare. The couple was granted a separation with a directive to uphold peace and order in their interactions.
