The Labour Party (LP) has responded to what it perceives as an attack on the integrity of its vice presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, Datti Baba Ahmed.
The Nigerian Law School recently imposed a ban on Baze University in Abuja, prohibiting the admission of students to its Faculty of Law. This action was taken due to the university’s alleged consistent breach of the approved admission quota of 50 students per session set by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).
According to the LP, there is an ongoing campaign to discredit and target their VP candidate unjustly. The party revealed that attempts were made to have Baba Ahmed arrested following a statement he made on Arise TV, and now there are efforts to tarnish his integrity in relation to Baze University.
“We need to address this issue and highlight fundamental matters,” the party asserted, emphasizing that “Datti Baba Ahmed is the owner of Baze University.”
In a statement released by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, the National Publicity Secretary, the LP emphasized that the university is an independent entity, stating, “We are intervening in this matter due to its political implications.”
The LP clarified that Baze University obtained its provisional license from the National Universities Commission (NUC) on March 7, 2011, and has since maintained a commendable standard of education.
“It is crucial to understand that the ban on the university’s Law Faculty does not affect the current enrolled undergraduates, who will complete their studies as scheduled,” the LP highlighted.
“While we urge the Council of Legal Education (CLE) to perform its duties, we strongly urge that it should not be exploited for political motives,” the party concluded.
