The Nigerian Senate has unanimously called on the Federal Government to withhold statutory allocations from local government councils that lack democratic elections. This decision aims to curb the authoritarian tendencies exhibited by some state governors.

The resolution follows a motion presented by Senator Abba Moro, highlighting the pressing need to address the erosion of democracy resulting from the dissolution of elected councils in Benue State.

Lawmakers argued that replacing elected councils with Caretaker Committees is not only undemocratic but also violates the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Senatorial District, expressed dismay as he seconded the motion, emphasizing the detrimental impact of this issue on Nigeria’s local government system.

Consequently, the Senate condemned the arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected local government councils in Benue and other states.

It is worth noting that in June, Alia suspended all local government executives in Benue State.

In efforts to uphold Nigeria’s democratic principles, the Senate urged Alia to honour his oath of office, respect the rule of law, review the constitution of caretaker committees, and reinstate the elected councils.
