Nigerian troops are making significant strides in the fight against illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta, destroying 51 illegal oil refining sites and recovering stolen crude oil and refined products in the last week alone. This aggressive operation led by the troops of Operation Delta Safe has dealt a heavy blow to oil thieves, apprehending 58 perpetrators and denying them access to an estimated sum of N668.7 million.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, revealed these remarkable achievements, highlighting the extensive list of assets destroyed by the troops. This includes seven dugout pits, 25 boats, 47 storage tanks, five vehicles, 141 cooking ovens, and various other equipment used in illegal refining activities. The impact of this operation is further underscored by the recovery of 267,700 litres of stolen crude oil, 567,700 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 5,000 litres of DPK.
The operations extended beyond the Niger Delta, with troops also clamping down on oil theft in the South East and South West regions. In the South East, troops of Operation UDO KA arrested 15 suspected criminals, thwarted attacks by IPOB/ESN criminals, and conducted successful raids to rescue kidnapped hostages. Meanwhile, in the South West, troops of Operation AWATSE foiled armed robbery attacks and apprehended a gunrunner, demonstrating their unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and security in the region.
Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba emphasized that all recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further action, underscoring the commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice prevails.
This resolute action by the Nigerian troops signifies a formidable stance against illegal activities, sending a clear message that such illicit operations will not be tolerated. As the operations continue to yield positive results, this proactive approach is crucial in safeguarding Nigeria’s valuable natural resources and upholding the integrity of the nation.
By relentlessly pursuing perpetrators and dismantling illegal operations, the troops of Operation Delta Safe, Operation UDO KA, and Operation AWATSE are not only protecting Nigeria’s economic interests but also demonstrating their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its citizens.
