Nigerian Troops Destroy 51 Illegal Refining Sites, Recover Stolen Crude Oil

Nigerian troops have made significant strides in the fight against illegal oil refining in the Niger Delta, with the destruction of 51 illegal refining sites and the recovery of stolen crude oil and refined products in the past week. This commendable feat was achieved by the gallant troops of Operation Delta Safe, showcasing their unwavering commitment to curbing illicit activities in the region.

Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, revealed these remarkable accomplishments in a statement released from the Defence Headquarters in Abuja. The dedicated efforts of the troops led to the apprehension of 58 perpetrators of oil theft and the interception of an estimated sum of N668.7 million, dealing a severe blow to criminal syndicates involved in illegal oil activities.

The operations also resulted in the demolition of seven dugout pits, 25 boats, 47 storage tanks, five vehicles, 141 cooking ovens, one pumping machine, one outboard engine, one tricycle, one speedboat, and one tugboat. Additionally, the troops successfully recovered 267,700 litres of stolen crude oil, 567,700 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 5,000 litres of DPK, further dismantling the infrastructure of illegal oil operations.

Furthermore, the enduring momentum against oil theft led to the arrest of individuals involved in illicit activities in Bonny and Ikpoba Local Government Areas of Rivers and Edo States, signifying the widespread impact of the operations. The gallant troops also thwarted suspected armed robbers and illegal bunkering activities in Oshimili South and Ukwa West of Delta and Abia States, effectively restoring peace and security in the region.

In a parallel display of unwavering commitment and valor, troops of Operation UDO KA in the South East arrested 15 suspected criminals and repelled attacks by IPOB/ESN criminals in Anambra, Abia, and Imo States. These heroic actions included daring raids that resulted in the rescue of kidnapped hostages in Ishielu and Igbo Eze North Local Government Areas of Ebonyi and Enugu States, demonstrating the troops’ dedication to safeguarding the lives of citizens.

Additionally, the troops neutralized three criminals, rescued five kidnapped hostages, and recovered 14 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammo, underscoring their relentless efforts to combat criminal elements in the region. Meanwhile, in the South West, troops of Operation AWATSE displayed exceptional vigilance by foiling armed robbery attacks in Orelope and Olorunsogo Local Government Areas of Oyo State and apprehending a gunrunner in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

As a testament to their unwavering resolve, the troops rescued 15 kidnapped hostages and recovered two vehicles, reinforcing their pivotal role in maintaining law and order. All recovered items, arrested suspects, and rescued hostages have been dutifully handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal action, ensuring that justice prevails.

This remarkable display of courage and dedication by the Nigerian troops is a testament to their unyielding commitment to upholding peace and security across the nation. Their relentless efforts in combating illicit activities and restoring stability in the Niger Delta and beyond serve as an exemplar of valor, embodying the noble spirit of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
