Nigeria extends profound gratitude to the European Union (EU) for its unwavering support in the battle against gender-based violence. The allocation of twenty-five million euros (€25,000,000) to aid this cause marks a significant milestone in the collective effort to eradicate this societal scourge. The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. The minister, represented by the Director of the International Corporation Department, Dr. Lanre Adekanye, highlighted the strides made by the Spotlight Initiative in Nigeria. Furthermore, he reassured the audience that the ministry is resolute in its support for similar programs aimed at upholding the outcomes and impact of the Spotlight Initiative. He underscored the pivotal role of women and girls as agents of development and change in any society.

In a similar vein, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Matthias Schmale, voiced his delight at the federal government, civil society groups, the women’s movement, and youth organizations for their leadership and dedication to creating a world free from violence against women and girls. He expounded on the significance of the initiative, which has made tangible strides since its inception in 2019, by drawing attention to the pivotal role it played in addressing gender-based violence.

Marking the successful conclusion of the EU-funded EU-UN @GlobalSpotlight Initiative in Nigeria, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, H.E Amb. Samuela Isopi, commended the program for propelling a holistic approach that galvanized all stakeholders, resulting in significant outcomes. She cited the unprecedented passage of the Child’s Right Act in nearly all states in Nigeria, underscoring the program’s tangible impact. Additionally, she affirmed the EU’s unwavering commitment to fostering the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, and prioritizing women’s rights and inclusion across various sectors, including education, maternal health, economic empowerment, and political representation.

The collaboration between the Nigerian government and international partners underscores a resounding commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of women and girls, catalyzing sustainable development and progress for all. This collective effort stands as a testament to the unyielding resolve to create a world free from gender-based violence, safeguarding the fundamental rights of all individuals.
