Kano State Governor Initiates N6bn Gratuity Payment to Pensions

In a significant move to alleviate the plight of retired workers, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State kickstarted the disbursement of approximately N6 billion in accumulated gratuities to pensioners. This landmark initiative was inaugurated at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, marking a pivotal moment in addressing the long-standing issue of pension arrears in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Yusuf expressed his administration’s commitment to redressing the negligence suffered by retirees, citing the previous administration’s disregard for crucial sectors, including the unlawful deductions from monthly pension payments. He underscored the fulfillment of his campaign pledge to settle pension gratuities and halt unwarranted deductions, despite the challenges posed by other pressing demands on the state’s resources.

Highlighting the magnitude of the backlog, Governor Yusuf affirmed the government’s unwavering determination to liquidate the over N48 billion owed in pensions and gratuities, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the payment process. Moreover, he urged the beneficiaries to utilize their entitlements wisely, ensuring a secure and prosperous future.

In his address, Habu Fagge, the executive chairman of the Kano State Pension Trustee Fund, echoed the transformative impact of injecting N6 billion into pension disbursements, affirming its far-reaching benefits in revitalizing the state’s economy, welfare, and overall livelihood.

The Chief of Staff, Shehu Sagagi, and Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, lauded Governor Abba Yusuf’s administration for delivering on its promise to prioritize pensioners’ welfare, acknowledging the pivotal role of the gratuity payments in alleviating the hardships faced by retirees and civil servants.

The laudable initiative earned recognition from the National President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, represented by the National Trustee, Abdullahi Tsoho Garba, who hailed the governor’s pensioner-friendly approach. Additionally, the commendation extended to the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, through the Magajin Rafin Kano, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ahmed, for initiating this impactful program.
