The Serendipity Behind “Blow My Mind”: WurlD’s Decision to Gift Davido the Song

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Sadiq Onifade, popularly known as WurlD, recently shed light on his decision to gift his composition, “Blow My Mind,” to Davido, a leading figure in the Nigerian music scene. The song, eventually released in 2019 as a collaboration between Davido and American R&B sensation Chris Brown, was initially penned by WurlD.

In a candid interview with 3Music TV in Accra, Ghana, WurlD revealed the spontaneous nature of the song’s transition to Davido. He disclosed, “It [giving ‘Blow My Mind’ to Davido] wasn’t planned. I was in Lagos promoting my project, ‘Love Is Contagious,’ and I got a call from my guy, producer Shizzi… It was even one of those things I didn’t plan for because I was gonna use the song myself. I wanted to get some features on the record, but I was promoting a new project, and I didn’t have time.

The decision to part with the song, as WurlD explained, stemmed from a lack of immediate utility for the track in his own artistic endeavors. “I didn’t have a use for ‘Blow My Mind’ at that time,” he elaborated. However, the synergy that unfolded following the song’s adoption by Davido and Chris Brown filled WurlD with gratification. He remarked, “Davido and Chris Brown, it’s just a beautiful thing to lend my art with another artiste and at the same time and see how well the song is done.”

This revelation provides an intimate glimpse into the organic evolution of musical collaboration and the inherent camaraderie within the Nigerian music industry. WurlD’s impromptu act of generosity has contributed to the creation of a musical masterpiece, resonating with audiences far beyond the shores of Nigeria.

This insightful disclosure by WurlD not only showcases the interconnectedness of artists within the Nigerian music landscape but also underscores the serendipitous nature of creative expression, where unplanned moments often lead to extraordinary outcomes.
