The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has taken a decisive step by suspending its chairman, Charles Ugwu, following allegations of misconduct. This shift in leadership was announced in a statement on Tuesday by the state secretary, Njaka Duruiheoma.
In a notable change of leadership, the statement revealed that Chidi Dike, the zonal chairman of the party for Okigwe zone, has assumed the role of acting state chairman in the wake of Ugwu’s suspension.
The decision to suspend Ugwu was not taken lightly, as it came after a motion was set in motion by Emeka Alihe, the PDP Chairman of Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area, and Chairman of all the PDP Chairmen in the state. This motion was supported by Godspower Apollos, the PDP Chairman of Owerri Municipal, and endorsed by no fewer than 18 other local government chairmen and members of the State Executive Committee.
Unpacking the reasons behind the suspension, Alihe highlighted serious concerns regarding Ugwu’s failure to convene a meeting of the State Working Committee since August 2023, a violation of the party’s Constitution. In addition, Ugwu was faulted for his absence from crucial events such as the governorship candidate’s thank-you tours across the 27 local governments of Imo State and the Local Government campaign rallies, despite being duly informed and notified.
This internal turmoil within the PDP in Imo State underscores the significance of upholding the party’s constitutional obligations and the expectation of active participation from its leadership.
The suspension of Charles Ugwu signifies a significant development in the political landscape of Imo State, with implications that could ripple through the broader Nigerian political sphere. It remains to be seen how this move will shape the future trajectory of the PDP within the state and beyond.
As the party navigates this period of transition, all eyes are on the unfolding developments within the Imo State PDP, making it a focal point for political observers and stakeholders across the nation.
