Mavuso Msimang, the deputy president of the African National Congress Veterans’ League (ANCVL), has made a poignant decision to sever ties with the party after dedicating more than 60 years to its cause. In a heartfelt three-page resignation letter, Msimang expressed profound anguish over the rampant corruption within the ANC, citing its detrimental impact on the governance of the country and the lives of its impoverished citizens.
The letter, dated December 6, 2023, surfaced on various social media platforms late last night, corroborated by a trusted source who confirmed its authenticity to the Daily Maverick shortly before midnight.
Msimang lamented, “For several years now, the ANC has been wracked by endemic corruption, with devastating consequences on the governance of the country and the lives of poor people, of whom there continue to be so many.”
In his poignant missive, Msimang highlighted distressing incidents, including children drowning in pit latrines, raw sewage contaminating rivers, over a hundred fatalities in the Life Esidimeni tragedy, individuals perishing while awaiting ambulances, and businesses faltering. He juxtaposed these grim realities with the ostentatious displays of wealth by ANC leaders and their privileged access to elite educational institutions for their offspring.
Furthermore, Msimang decried the organization’s diminishing popularity, attributing it to widespread perceptions of corruption among its members and ‘deployees’, the party’s apparent tolerance for venality, and the deployment of ill-suited individuals contributing to the government’s abysmal service to the public.
