Nigeria’s football stars, Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala, have scored big with nominations in the final three-man shortlist for the prestigious CAF Player of the Year awards, showcasing their remarkable talent on the African stage and beyond.

Osimhen, who emerged as the top scorer in the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, is set to compete with Egypt’s prolific Mohammed Salah, Morocco’s formidable Achraf Hakimi, and Algeria’s skillful Riyad Mahrez for the coveted title. His impactful performance was pivotal in Napoli’s Scudetto triumph last season, where he clinched the Golden Boot with an impressive tally of 26 goals.

Meanwhile, Oshoala, the reigning African women’s player of the year, has shone brightly alongside South Africa’s Thembi Klagtlana and Zambia’s Barbara Banda, vying for the top honor. Oshoala’s stellar record includes scoring 21 goals in 28 games, propelling FC Barcelona to clinch the 2022/23 Spanish League title. She further demonstrated her prowess as Barcelona’s top scorer with 27 goals in all competitions, playing a pivotal role in retaining their domestic title and securing the UEFA Women’s Champions League victory.

Notably, Oshoala etched her name in history at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, becoming the first Nigerian and female African player to score in three different editions of the prestigious tournament.

The much-anticipated award ceremony is slated for 11th December 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco, heralding a celebration of outstanding talent and immense dedication in the realm of African football.
