The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has issued a clarion call for the active involvement of Nigerian adolescents and young people in combatting the HIV/AIDS scourge. This appeal was made by the Director General of NACA, Dr. Gambo Aliyu, during the National Symposium on HIV Prevention Models for Adolescents and Young People, held in Abuja.
Dr. Gambo, represented by Dr. James Anenih, the Director of Community Prevention and Care Services at NACA, emphasized the significance of amplifying the voices of the youth. He underscored the government’s commitment to formulating initiatives that empower young individuals in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Additionally, he urged the youth to actively participate in the development of strategies tailored to their unique needs.
Highlighting the alarming statistics, Dr. Gambo stated, “Evidence compiled in the last year indicates that a significant percentage of new HIV infections occur among adolescents and young people. As a response, engaging them in targeted services for prevention and treatment is paramount.”
Furthermore, Dr. Olawale Durisinmi, the Country Lead of JSI Research and Training Incorporated, elucidated on the organization’s role in providing technical support to the government in HIV prevention. This support aims to ensure that interventions are designed to benefit Nigerians and address the specific needs and challenges of the key populations.
Dr. Gambo’s call to action and the collaboration with organizations like JSI Research and Training Incorporated demonstrate a concerted effort to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS by involving the youth. This proactive approach not only empowers young Nigerians but also signifies a pivotal step towards a healthier and more resilient society.
