The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) Zamfara Command has reported six fatalities resulting from road crashes in Gusau, as the city undergoes extensive road reconstruction. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, sector commander Iro Danladi emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the ongoing repair works on the roads in order to prevent further loss of lives.
In light of the recent fatalities, it was noted that the victims were predominantly women and children attempting to navigate the roads amidst the reconstruction efforts. Danladi issued a stern warning to drivers, urging them to exercise extreme caution and significantly reduce their speed to a mere 20km/hr to mitigate the risk of unforeseen circumstances.
Despite the presence of FRSC personnel to regulate traffic, Danladi stressed the crucial need for construction companies overseeing the projects to ensure the provision of adequate road signs and deploy traffic officers to alert motorists and the general public. Furthermore, he called upon the government to proactively educate the public on navigating the roads during this period of extensive reconstruction, acknowledging the resultant changes in traffic patterns. He advocated for government-sponsored initiatives such as jingles and media campaigns to effectively disseminate information and create awareness among citizens, particularly those residing in the affected areas.
The recent tragedies underscore the urgency of prioritizing safety measures and public awareness amid infrastructural developments. As the reconstruction efforts continue to reshape the landscape of Gusau, it is imperative for stakeholders to collaborate in implementing comprehensive safety protocols and educational campaigns to safeguard the lives of the community.
This tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the critical intersection between infrastructure development and public safety, urging all concerned parties to unite in prioritizing the protection of lives during periods of significant transformation.
As the Zamfara Command of the FRSC navigates the aftermath of these heartbreaking incidents, it remains essential for all stakeholders to heed the call for heightened vigilance and proactive safety measures to avert further tragedies on the roadways.
