The Supreme Court has delivered a final verdict in the case filed by Darlington Nwokocha, seeking a review of the judgment that revoked his position as the Senator representing Abia Central district. Nwokocha’s plea to overturn the appellate court’s decision and reclaim his former seat was met with dismissal by the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Following the February 25 Senatorial election in Abia Central, which Nwokocha claims to have overwhelmingly won, he contested the reasons cited by the Appeal Court panel for his ousting in November, deeming them unjustified.
In a decisive turn of events, the Supreme Court not only rejected Nwokocha’s motion but also imposed a two million naira fine against him, payable to Senator Austin Akobundu.
This ruling echoes the earlier rejection of Nwokocha’s motion for review by the Abuja division of the Appeal Court, which additionally imposed a hefty five million naira fine on him and his Counsel, to be paid to Senator Austin Akobundu and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Reacting to this development, Abraham Amah, Vice Chairman and acting Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Abia, lauded the judgement as another triumph for the PDP, Senator Austin Akobundu, the people of Abia Central, and the Nigerian democracy.
Whether this ruling will bring closure to the contentious case or spark further legal maneuvers remains to be seen, but for now, Senator Akobundu stands tall, consolidating his victory in this legal skirmish.
