In a remarkable display of compassion and commitment to criminal rehabilitation, the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service took a pivotal step on Tuesday by granting freedom to eight inmates.
According to a press release by the Nigerian Correctional Service’s Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom State, ASC Richard Metong, the inmates’ release was made possible through the benevolence of the Minister of Interior, Hon. This act of clemency and grace is aligned with the Federal Government’s resolute mission to alleviate the congestion within correctional service centers, underscoring a pivotal shift towards restoration and societal reintegration.
ASC Richard Metong highlighted that the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa FICMC, MFR, mni, in the person of the Controller of Corrections Akwa Ibom State Command, Julius Ezugwu, advised the newly freed individuals to embody the values of the Service and themselves by leading a lawful and virtuous life. Moreover, they were encouraged to leverage the vocational skills and trades they had acquired during their time in custody.
In a poignant moment, one of the liberated inmates, serving as a voice for the others, expressed profound gratitude to the Divine for bestowing upon them a second chance to rectify their past missteps, a sentiment that resonates deeply within the human spirit.
