Former Manchester United Star Expresses Doubts Over Antony’s Ability to Thrive in the Premier League
Former Manchester United player, Jaap Stam, has publicly criticized the performance of the club’s winger, Antony, casting doubt on the Brazilian’s suitability for the Red Devils.
Antony, who was signed from Ajax in 2022 at the insistence of manager Erik ten Hag, has struggled to leave a significant mark at Manchester United. Despite a moderately successful debut season, wherein he scored eight goals and provided three assists, the 23-year-old has yet to find the back of the net in the current season.
In a candid interview on the Stick to Football podcast, Stam remarked, “From what I have seen from Antony, he’s not good enough at this level that we are looking for at United.” He continued, “You are also looking for a player who can have a difficult time and struggle when he comes in, but [we can see] where he is making progress to get to that level. When you are looking at Antony now, at this moment, you don’t see where he can make the progress to make the next step in the Premier League, to be up there with the top wingers who can make a difference.”
Stam’s comments have revived the debate on Antony’s potential and the expectations placed on players at an elite club like Manchester United. The Dutchman’s willingness to openly critique a current player has sparked discussions among fans and pundits alike, with opinions divided on the young winger’s abilities and future prospects in the Premier League.
