Mozambique’s National Health Service (SNS) is set to enhance its National Vaccination Calendar by incorporating new vaccines, including those targeting Hepatitis B (HBV) in newborns and the vaccine against typhoid fever.
During a recent visit by a high-level mission of the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI), Health Minister Armindo Tiago revealed the country’s plans to apply for GAVI’s tenders in the coming year to receive support for the introduction of these vaccines. Additionally, GAVI has expressed interest in providing support for the introduction of vaccines against malaria and cholera by 2024.
Despite the strides made in vaccine introduction, which include vaccines against Covid-19, polio, and cholera, Health Minister Tiago emphasized that primary healthcare services remain a top priority for the government.
David Marlow, the executive director of GAVI, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to continuously support Mozambique in the field of immunization, stressing the importance of fostering collaboration between central, provincial, and district levels.
The timing of GAVI’s visit is crucial as Mozambique endeavors to address the challenge of reducing the number of children who have not received the first dose of vaccines according to the National Vaccination Calendar. Minister Tiago disclosed that in 2022, Mozambique achieved a vaccination coverage rate of 94% against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and 99% against Covid-19.
The move to expand the National Vaccination Program underscores Mozambique’s commitment to strengthening its healthcare infrastructure and ensuring the well-being of its population.
