Former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Leader, Dr. Thomas John, Passes Away at 84

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC Ltd.) has announced the lamentable passing of Dr. Thomas Maurice Asuquo John, a distinguished former Group Managing Director (GMD) and Acting Alternate Chairman of the Board of the now-defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

John, an eminent figure in administration and the oil and gas industry, passed away at the age of 84. During his tenure as the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr. Aret Adams, which spanned from April 1990 to June 1992, he made significant contributions to the development and management of the nation’s petroleum resources.

Throughout his illustrious career, John held several vital positions within the industry. He served as a Non-Executive Director at South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), assumed the role of Executive Chairman at Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and previously served as a Non-Executive Director at United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc.

“A quintessential administrator and oil & gas industry professional, Dr. John was the 5th GMD of NNPC, succeeding the late Dr. Aret Adams from April 1990 to June 1992,” the NNPC statement read. “He was also a Non-Executive Director, South Atlantic Petroleum (SAPETRO), Executive Chairman, Hydropec Engineering Services Ltd., and former Non-Executive Director, United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, among other positions.”

“On behalf of the entire NNPC Ltd. Management and Staff, the GCEO, Mr. Mele Kyari, extends the company’s heartfelt condolences to his dear wife, family, friends, and relatives during this very trying period. May his soul rest in peace.”

Dr. Thomas John leaves behind a legacy that has indelibly shaped the Nigerian oil and gas industry. His wisdom, leadership, and dedication to the energy sector will be deeply missed.
