William Troost-Ekong Surprised by Super Eagles Omission, Expresses Willingness for AFCON

Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong has voiced his surprise at being omitted from the recent selections for the Super Eagles, expressing his ongoing commitment to the national team and his desire to contribute to future matches, including the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe in September, Troost-Ekong, a prominent centre-back, has not received a call-up from Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro. With the AFCON finals looming, his exclusion from the provisional squad has cast uncertainty on his international future.

In response to the developments, the 30-year-old emphasized that he has not retired from international football, affirming his eagerness to continue representing his country on the global stage. In an interview with Soccernet, Troost-Ekong conveyed his surprise at the recent turn of events, stating, “No, I haven’t retired from international football. I think it’s too early for me to make that decision.”

Undeterred by the unexpected setback, Troost-Ekong remains resolute in his dedication to the team, as he reiterated, “I’m still very willing, and yes, supporting the team. I’ve been following the games like always. I think I have been part of the squad for like eight years now. It has been a bit of a surprise for me. But the best I can do is to work hard in my club. I think I am showing that I can still be of great help for the team.”

Looking ahead to the AFCON, Troost-Ekong affirmed his unwavering commitment, expressing optimism about the potential inclusion in the final 27-man squad. He acknowledged the dynamic nature of the situation, stating, “Yeah, we will see what happens with AFCON. But I’m still very willing, and I want the best for Nigeria.”

As Coach Peseiro has already submitted the provisional list for the biennial competition, the stage is set for a decisive period leading up to the final 27-man squad submission to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) by January 7, 2023.
