The ongoing race for the position of National Chairman of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has taken a dramatic turn with revelations of criminal charges brought against a key contender, Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle. The Chairman of the IPAC Electoral Committee, Barr Dan Nwanyanwu, has uncovered that Dantalle is currently facing charges at the Federal High Court in Lokoja over the alleged possession of arms.
The State Security Services (SSS) reportedly initiated legal proceedings against Dantalle in October 2021, accusing him of being in possession of dangerous weapons in Ayingba, Kogi State. The charges, filed under the case marked LKJ/FHC/61/21, specify that Dantalle was apprehended with a Barreta Pistol and nine live rounds of ammunition, both without a license.
Despite these serious allegations, Dantalle, who serves as the National Chairman of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), has chosen to vie for the IPAC national chairmanship against Engr Yabagi Yusuf Sani, the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP).
Barr Dan Nwanyanwu, when reached for comment, stressed that as the head of the electoral committee, it is not within his purview to determine the eligibility of candidates. His sole responsibility revolves around ensuring a fair, impartial, and peaceful electoral process for all contenders.
In response to the allegations, Dantalle acknowledged the ongoing legal proceedings but emphasized that he maintains his presumption of innocence until proven guilty by the court. He conveyed confidence in the legal system, emphasizing that his innocence will ultimately be upheld.
The unfolding developments surrounding Dantalle’s candidacy have cast a shadow over the upcoming IPAC election, raising questions about the suitability of candidates seeking to lead the council. As the legal process unfolds, the political landscape within IPAC remains fraught with uncertainty, awaiting the resolution of the criminal charges and their potential impact on the electoral race.
