A tragic cholera outbreak in the Jukun community of Didango, in Karim Lamido Local Government Council of Taraba State, has led to the deaths of six individuals, with 40 others currently hospitalized. The distressing news was unveiled by Sunday Danjos, the chairman of the council, during a recent press briefing in Jalingo, the state capital.
Danjos addressed the affected community, urging patience during this difficult time. “I want to call on my people to exercise patience with the current happenings, particularly in Jukun, Didango, of Karim Lamido Local Government,” he expressed solemnly.
Describing the dire situation, Danjos explained, “The pandemic is cholera; this is because of the bad water people drink. They drink it together with animals, so this has caused a problem for their health, as they are purging and vomiting.”
He further stated his intent to report the situation to the Commissioner of Health for immediate action. “I am going now to see the Commissioner of Health to report to him what is happening in my local government so that he will take it to the higher authority for necessary action,” Danjos affirmed.
The outbreak, according to locals, commenced on Thursday when people, particularly children, began experiencing symptoms of the illness.
Dr. Bodiya Buma, the Commissioner for Health, confirmed the incident and reassured the public that the state government is actively addressing and controlling the matter. Additionally, Fredrick Nyanganji, the Director of Primary Health Care of Karim Lamido Local Government, disclosed that the outbreak, which occurred on December 14, 2023, tragically claimed the lives of six children.
As the community grapples with this devastating situation, efforts are underway to contain the outbreak and provide necessary support to those affected.
