The Kogi State House of Assembly has voiced concern over the recent spike in tuition fees at the state-owned higher institution, Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) in Anyigba.
According to reports, the university’s management has implemented a tuition fee increase to N75,000 for indigenes and N100,000 for non-indigenes. When the institution’s management appeared before the house standing committee on education, science, and technology to justify its 2024 budget proposal on Monday, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf, expressed discontent and indicated the house would re-examine the situation.
The Speaker raised questions about the rationale behind the fee adjustment, stating that the university management was essentially transferring its financial burden to the students, a move he deemed unacceptable. Additionally, the Deputy Speaker, Paul Enema, underscored the financial strain this would place on the students, especially considering the added pressure of rental expenses.
In an earlier address, the deputy vice-chancellor, administration, Professor Olusola Jamiu Salihu, emphasized that the tuition fees were revised in response to current economic conditions and the escalating cost of diesel.
