Amhara Region Thwarts Illicit Arms Trafficking Aimed at Destabilizing the Region

The Amhara Peace and Security Bureau has made a startling revelation, uncovering a series of illegal arms trafficking operations designed to sow chaos and violence in the region. In a proactive response, the bureau has intercepted multiple attempts at smuggling unauthorized weapons, shedding light on a concerning trend aimed at destabilizing the Amhara Region.

According to a recent statement released by the regional communication bureau, there is evidence of organized efforts to flood the region with illegal firearms, which has raised alarm bells about the potential for increased unrest and violence. Although the statement did not explicitly name the culprits behind these nefarious activities, it emphasized the gravity of the situation.

The details of the interceptions are no less concerning. A truck, ostensibly transporting cement from Mekelle, was apprehended in Filakit Geregera town by the local police. Upon inspection, authorities discovered a cache of firearms, including a staggering 10,385 Kalashnikov and Bren guns concealed within the vehicle.

Further revelations emerged as another truck, originating from the Gayint district, was intercepted upon reaching Debre Tabor town. This time, it was found to be carrying seven Kalashnikov rifles and over 2,000 other firearms. Even more alarming, the authorities learned from the suspect in custody about an additional stockpile of 15,000 bullets that had eluded the initial search.

In a separate incident, a truck transporting products from the Mesebo cement factory was stopped while en route from Kobo to Debre Tabor. The inspection uncovered 8,143 rounds of hidden ammunition, raising serious concerns about the scale of the illicit arms trade infiltrating the region.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, another truck traveling from Kobo to Gayint was seized for smuggling sniper rifles disguised within a shipment of sand, shedding light on the brazen tactics employed by those involved in the illegal arms trade.

In response to these alarming developments, the Peace and Security Bureau has issued a call to action, urging the community to remain vigilant and actively participate in safeguarding the region against the proliferation of illegal weapons.

The backdrop against which these interceptions have occurred is one of heightened tension and conflict. The region was placed under a state of emergency in August, following escalating hostilities between the non-state Fano militia and government forces. Despite the government’s assurances of restored peace and order in most parts of the region, the prevalence of such illicit arms trafficking operations underscores the ongoing security challenges facing the Amhara Region.

Through its swift and decisive actions, the Amhara Peace and Security Bureau has demonstrated a commitment to upholding the safety and stability of the region. It remains imperative for all stakeholders to remain vigilant and actively collaborate in efforts to combat the illegal arms trade and safeguard the peace and prosperity of the Amhara Region.
